Our Book Launched

Working closely with award winning author Sara Eade the book features Plas Tan-Yr-Allt and some of our famous former residents. Exclusive signed copies from the author are available to purchase here at The Plas.

William Madocks MP who lived here at Plas Tan-Yr-Allt was responsible for the construction of two local embankments in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The later embankment known as the Cob in Porthmadog allowed the transportation of slate from nearby Blanaeu Ffestiniog to be shipped worldwide. Madocks also founded our village of Tremadog and neighbouring town of Porthmadog.

Featured throughout the book are some of our famous former residents and visitors including romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, E.F Benson who wrote the Mapp & Lucia novels, A.C Benson the writer of the words for Land of Hope & Glory (which is sung every year at the end of the Proms), Elizabeth Billington the opera singer of her day, Ellen and Hilda Greaves the mother and aunt of world famous Portmeirion founder Sir Clough Williams-Ellis all to name but a few.

Possibly the most comprehensive book of its kind social historian Sara Eade has extensively researched William and his achievements as well as some of the people and places he knew, from original material where it exists.

This is Sara’s ninth book and is hard backed, in A4 format and contains 232 well-illustrated pages including maps and engravings as well as modern photographs.

William Alexander Madocks Portmadoc DVD / BLU RAY

William Alexander Madocks Portmadoc is now available on DVD / BLU RAY.

Featuring the house – Once home of William A Madocks – Sit back & relax with this fascinating 50 minute documentary on the life and works of this great man.

There is also an extra feature on ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ (as he was born here in Tremadog).

William Alexander Madocks was born into a wealthy family in London’s extravagant English society in 1773, the third son of John & Frances Madocks, in 1802 he became MP for Boston in Lincolnshire. He inherited a large amount of money from his father that was stipulated to be used for the purchase of land. As he was very fond of the noth west area of Snowdonia, this is where he reclaimed land from the Glaslyn estuary at Traeth Mawr to be used for agricultural use by building the embankment that we know today as the Cob. After the Glaslyn was diverted it formed a deep water basin that he transformed into the harbour that we know today. Afterwards he was given permission by King George III to call it Madocks port and the town became known as ‘Portmadoc’. Later in 1974 it changed to the Welsh name of ‘Porthmadog’. Madocks also built the village of Tremadog a short distance from ‘Porthmadog’. Tremadog is a fine example of 19th century architecture. Porthmadog is known for being synonymous with shipping slate all over the world. Thomas Edward Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) was born in Tremadog in 188, a short insight of Lawrence’s time during the Arab revolt in 1916 has been added to the DVD as an extra.

Shelley’s Ale Launched

In homage to the romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley who lived here from 1812-1813.Our new beer Shelley’s Ale is now available to buy at the Llechwedd Slate Cavern’s Gift Shop. Each gift box contains 3x 500ml bottles with a unique description of Shelley and his time at The Plas.
The Romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, came to North Wales in 1812. He and his wife settled at Tan y Allt in Tremadog, the home of MP and landowner William Alexander Madocks. Shelley arrived at a time whilst Madocks’ towns of Tremadog and Porthmadog were being developed and the Cob, which had breached earlier in the year, was under repair. Fascinated by what he saw he was keen to be involved but his involvement did not endear himself to all he met.

A possible assassination attempt took place at Tan y Allt in late February 1813 and as a result, Shelley and his wife left never to return. Shelley later went on to marry Mary Shelley the creator of ‘Frankenstein’.

Some writers have even suggested that the apparition Shelley saw during that fateful February night (known as Shelley’s Ghost) was the impetus behind Mary Shelley’s most famous creation.

Plas Tan-Yr-Allt Historic Country House now offers luxury accommodation where guests can wander in the footsteps of the Shelley’s and stay in one of the bedrooms ‘Shelley’s Theatre’
