The Ffestiniog Railway is the world’s oldest narrow gauge railway with almost 200 years of history, taking you on a 13½-mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog – The Welsh Highland Railway is the UK’s longest heritage railway and runs for 25 miles from Caernarfon, past the foot of Snowdon and the picture postcard village of Beddgelert, then through the stunning Aberglaslyn Pass and on to Porthmadog. We have strong historic links to the railways: William Alexander Madocks was responsible for the construction of Y Cob – Principal engineer James Spooner & his family also lived here at The Plas – Former resident John Whitehead Greaves had connections with the Ffestiniog Railway in its early years and was also responsible for developing slate mines above Blaenau Ffestiniog at Llechwedd. Plas Brondanw Gardens – A jewel in the Welsh Crown – The former home of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis founder of world famous Portmeirion. Both his mother Ellen and aunt Mary (Miss Hilda) lived here at The Plas and Sir Clough was a regular visitor to the house.

The main features date from the early part of the 20th Century before he began Portmeirion, but work continued on and off until the 1960’s.

‘WING IT IN WELSH LESSONS’

Language, History, Nature as one…

Gwefus – Come along to Penrhyndeudraeth to learn Welsh on the banks of the river Dwyryd. The Welsh sessions take place in the ‘sied setlo’ (settling shed) or ‘cwt mwd’ (mud shed) in the former Gwaith Powdwr with magnificent views of the river Dwyryd.

Using Welsh – even if it’s just a tiny bit – means the world to the people of this area as this is the first language of most of us. Sessions are just 1 hour 30 minutes – Learn pronunciation, how to ask for a coffee or a beer and some useful phrases + you will also get a little booklet to take home with you to practice!
