William Madocks MP who lived here at Plas Tan-Yr-Allt was responsible for the construction of two local embankments in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Madocks also founded our village of Tremadog and neighbouring town of Porthmadog.

Shelley’s Ale launched 2017

In homage to the romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley who lived here from 1812-1813.Our new beer Shelley's Ale is now available to buy at the Llechwedd Slate Cavern's Gift Shop. Each gift box contains 3x 500ml bottles with a unique description of Shelley and his time at The Plas.

The Romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, came to North Wales in 1812. He and his wife settled at Tan y Allt in Tremadog, the home of MP and landowner William Alexander Madocks. Shelley arrived at a time whilst Madocks’ towns of Tremadog and Porthmadog were being developed and the Cob, which had breached earlier in the year, was under repair. Fascinated by what he saw he was keen to be involved but his involvement did not endear himself to all he met. A possible assassination attempt took place at Tan y Allt in late February 1813 and as a result, Shelley and his wife left never to return. Shelley later went on to marry Mary Shelley the creator of Frankenstein. Some writers have even suggested that the apparition Shelley saw during that fateful February night (known as Shelley's Ghost) was the impetus behind Mary Shelley’s most famous creation. Plas Tan-Yr-Allt Historic Country House now offers luxury accommodation where guests can wander in the footsteps of the Shelley’s and stay in one of the bedrooms "Shelley's Theatre".
